The Quads Dormitories
St. Paul's School
Concord, New HampshireGoody Clancy designed new additions and renovations to four identical brick and limestone dormitory buildings, originally built in 1926. The interior of each building had been very institutional in character, with long corridors and no natural light. Student and faculty areas were intermingled with no private entries nor clear lines of delineation. Our renovations introduced natural light and created a greater sense of unity throughout the space. New faculty apartments were added in the form of a small house attached to each original building, while student rooms were rearranged along short corridors which open into a common living room. The new additions form intimate courtyards for each building, creating both an interesting entry for visitors and a small sheltered exterior space for student use.
Relevant Project Information:
- A new faculty unit was added to each building with harmonious but inventive details.
- All existing steel-frame windows were replaced, and each structure upgraded to be code-compliant.
- Project included renovating interior spaces such as student bedrooms, common rooms and the two existing faculty units.
- The work was completed in two successive summers.
