Kittredge Center for Business
Holyoke Community College
Holyoke, MassachusettsThis new facility for a suburban 1970s “Brutalist Modern” campus in central Massachusetts unites several departments, serves as a prominent new campus gateway and links the existing campus buildings with interior connections. Visible sustainability strategies highlight the College’s commitment to the environment.
We conducted an initial study which determined existing site conditions, programmatic requirements, building code compliance, siting options, building design alternatives, building systems, project schedule, construction cost and operating costs. We also worked closely with the College’s building committee to prioritize program needs and identify possible shared uses in order to reconcile the program with a tightly constrained budget.
Relevant Project Information:
- A business school facility for a community college provides classrooms, computer labs and meeting rooms dedicated for college use as well as conference and event spaces that can be shared by the entire community.
- Design seeks to enhance the success of the campus plaza, leverage great views and complement the massing of the existing buildings, while introducing a more varied approach to massing and materials.
- The interior circulation offers ample places to stop and linger, encouraging student socialization and collegiality.
- The addition of a clock tower at the building’s main entrance provides a new campus icon visible throughout the grounds.
Sustainable Design:
- The first green roof specified on a Massachusetts state building
- Sensitive site design enhancing existing adjacent wetland
- Energy efficient use of daylighting, sunshading devices, and photocell light control
