Graduate Center
Simmons College
Boston, MassachusettsThe Graduate Center is a four-story, 56,000 SF academic building, adjacent to the Main Academic Building on Simmons’s urban campus in the heart of Boston. It defines the historic Palace Road side of the academic campus, shaping its central quadrangle.
Relevant Project Information:
- Four-story building on the college's main academic campus provides a new home for the Graduate School of Social Work and the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences.
- Distinctive interiors and color treatments give separate identities to the two schools' offices, lounges, and classrooms.
- The building also houses the administrative departments for Academic Technology, Media, Academic Support Counseling, Career Education, and Administrative Technology.
- Although the form, materials, and colors of the Graduate Center are inspired by the early twentieth-century architecture of the main academic building nearby, the building design reinterprets the classical style in a bold manner that honors its context.
- The building, which replaced a parking lot, forms one edge of the newly created green oasis on this dense, urban campus.
- Underground parking replaces surface parking, allowing development of improved campus green space.
